Good Genes

We have good genes
Whatever that means
For a lifetime
Of living in between
Rich and poor
Happy and sad
In the mountains
Or on the shore
But good genes
Means longer lives
And more offspring
To do nothing
Or something
Be remembered
Be forgotten
While the good genes
Go on

Wright's Pond

This contemplative work follows the lead of a new father ambling around a small pond on the outskirts of Boston with his daughter and Wheaten terrier. It is narrated as one singular walk but passes through all four seasons, while little Winnie, surrounded by trees, relishes the fullness of her senses in the open air and discovers new wonders with every step. Her father is trying to discover a deeper connection to the earth and find some balance between the natural world and the human society that rules over it. The dog could care less about any self discovery and is only interested in catching waterfowl or rodents off their guard. She provides ample entertainment as she practices her inborn traits and embellishes them in enthusiastic and unsuccessful ways. Wright’s Pond is a simple walk, around a simple trail, observed through the collective eyes of a man, daughter and his dog. It’s an ode to its namesake as a tribute to and a plea for continued conservation of wild places in urban areas.

At around 80 pages, Wright's Pond is one of Connolly's proudest accomplishments. He set out to write it when he left his job to become his daughter's full time stay-at-home-dad. He met his deadline, completed and self-published it the night before her first birthday in March 2018.

"This work was the perfect mix of self reflection from the soul and storytelling from the heart. A great read."
